AA Degrees are Associate of Arts degrees. They are awarded by community, business or junior colleges and even four-year universities after completing two years of study.
Requirements for an AA Degree
AA degrees typically require at least two years of study and are equivalent to the first two years of a four-year university degree.
It’s the first rung on the post secondary academic ladder and very similar to the foundation degree in the UK and the diplôme d'etudes universitaires generales or DEUG in France.
Transferring With an AA (Associate of Arts) Degree
Many students obtain AA degrees from local or junior colleges as a way of transferring into a bachelor’s degree at another higher learning institution, like a four-year university.
Although not all courses and credits are automatically eligible for transfer, most students with an AA degree and a good GPA (grade-point average) will find they can easily transfer into a university degree with a major in the humanities or social sciences.
AA (Associate of Arts) Degree Time Requirements
Most Associate of Arts (AA) Degrees require two yeas of study, though they can often be completed on a part-time basis over a longer period of time.
In fact, close to 60 percent of US community college students currently enrolled in AA Degree programs are enrolled on a part-time basis.
For programs that last a year or less, some students may obtain what’s called a certificate or certification in a certain subject area or discipline.
Benefits of an AA (Associate of Arts) Degree
AA degrees are an excellent way to prepare a student for higher-level academics without fully immersing them in a university setting.
Instead of transitioning directly from high school to a university environment, students can prep themselves with a softer move into a community college setting.
This kind of transitioning typically translates to better grades, higher placement after two years and a significantly lower drop-out rate.
Students who first enroll in AA degree programs before transferring to a four-year university also save a significant amount of money.
Compared to private or even state universities, community colleges are significantly less expensive per credit hour. Students can also often live at home and reduce their day-to-day costs along with their tuition.
Stand-Alone AA Degrees
Most students use AA degrees as a way of transferring into another level of higher education. However, it is possible to enter the work force with a stand-alone AA degrees.
Young graduates holding AA degrees can often obtain administrative, bureaucratic or clerical work. Unfortunately, without a technical or more defined degree specification, it’s harder for students to qualify for specific careers.
