The Best Laptops and Computers for Colleges

The best laptops for college are affordable, light and advanced enough to take a student through four years of school without a need for hardware or software upgrades.

With most schools now requiring students to have some type of personal computer, laptops have become a back-to-school essential.

But, how do you find the best laptops for college? What do you look for? What models stand out from the crowd? To learn the answers to these questions and more, keep reading.

Portability is Critical

Though laptops are typically more expensive than their more powerful desktop counterparts, they offer students the flexibility of portability – meaning they can take notes in class, work in the library or bang out a paper at a nearby coffee shop.

If portability is high on your list of requirements, then look for a unit that’s lightweight. While you don’t want to sacrifice too much power, you also don’t want to be burdened with lugging a 12-pound laptop to and from campus every day. Trust me, your back will thank you.

Don’t Worry too Much About Processing Power

Unless you’re a hardcore gamer or into some serious database programming or hardcore graphics or video editing work, you don’t need to worry too much about processing power or 3D gaming cards.

Most systems sold today have enough power to run your word processors, email, instant messenger and Internet.

In fact, the best laptops for college are the affordable and lightweight versions – not the massive heavyweights needed for 3D –gaming and processor-intensive applications.

The System Stats You Want on Your College Laptop

Ideally, you want a system with at least 2GB of memory and enough battery power to take you through at least a couple of classes without needing to recharge.

The best laptops for college will come equipped with Wi-Fi, Ethernet, an integrated media card reader or USB key slot and at least 160GB of hard drive storage.

Look for a Good Warranty

The best laptops for college have a strong and well-supported warranty. Most laptops will come with at least a one-year warranty and retailers will typically add on two or three additional years for an extra charge.

I usually don’t recommend purchasing an extended warranty. However, for the broke college student who will typically be unable to afford to replace their entire laptop should anything malfunction – that $200 insurance could be worth it over the course of four years.

The Best College Laptops

Two of the best laptops for college this year are the Acer Aspire, offering Blu-Ray and 3GB of memory for an affordable $980 and the Dell Studio 15 which offers reasonably-priced graphics power starting at just $1200.
