Continuing education in dentistry is important because dentists must stay aware of new technologies and information in both health and cosmetic dentistry. Continuing education in dentistry lets new and veteran dentists discover new advances in their field, learn new skills and improve on their old ones. There are also regulations that a dentist has to meet in whatever state they reside which requires a continuing education in dentistry. Failure to meet those regulations could result in a revoked license. Advances in Dentistry It was only in the 1980s that x-rays started being used in dentistry, so imagine how far we've come since. Lately, discussions about laser dentistry have entered the mainstream. With the research and development of technology that will make tooth care safe and potentially painless, it is important to keep up with the vanguard of the industry. Cosmetic Dentistry Cosmetic dentistry has quickly become more and more popular as new technologies and products have made it easier and easier for anybody to have a movie star smile. Most people are familiar with braces, fillings and crowns, but procedures like bridges, bonding, veneers, implants and whitening are becoming more commonplace than ever. Knowing the advances in these areas and having the ability to work with a variety of techniques is the best way to not only maintain your current clients, but to attract new ones. Building Community One huge advantage to continuing education in dentistry is that it gives a forum for dentists, orthodontists and other tooth care specialists to network, build a community and have discourse on the issues that matter in dental medicine and hygiene. Networking, especially, can be very advantageous. In an education setting, like a seminar or conference, it is possible to find professionals in your area who you can team up with to make referrals and build client lists. After all, how many times has someone asked a dentist if they know a good orthodontist? Distance Education There are schools that offer dental continuing education through distance education courses and online workshops. This includes the University of Florida's College of Dentistry, which uses videoconferencing, the American Seminar Institute, which uses audio CDs in its distance learning coursework, and DDS-Online, which administers online distance courses. However you choose to fulfill your educational requirements or expand on your areas of expertise, it is important that you know your needs when you are looking for the right place to experience your continuing education in dentistry.
