Massage therapist continuing education is important for anybody working in massage therapy who wants to continue in their field.

Massage therapists should be certified by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork.

There are more than 90,000 certificate massage therapists and practitioners across the country.

Certified practitioners are educated in subjects like shiatsu, polarity therapy, Rolfing, reflexology, neuromuscular therapy and more. It is then possible to go on to massage therapist continuing education to stay up-to-date with current practices.

Becoming a Certified Massage Therapist

To become a certified practitioner of massage therapy, you need to complete at least five hundred hours of instruction, pass a standardized exam delivered by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork, demonstrate knowledge and ability in the field and uphold the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork's standards of practice and code of ethics.

The two examinations offered by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork to get certification are the National Examination for Therapeutic Massage and the National Examination for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork.

After you receive your certification, more massage therapy continuing education is available to expand on your base knowledge.

The National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork's code of ethics and standards of practice involve safeguards for clients, a commitment to safety, ethical practice and professional conduct.

Massage Therapist Continuing Education

The Institute for Integrative Healthcare Studies offers massage therapist continuing education in three different ways.

You can take your courses at home, receiving your course work and your test by posted mail, you can obtain your course materials and testing online or you can have your course materials mailed to you and take only your test online.

Massage therapist continuing education from the Institute for  Integrative Healthcare Studies is accepted by the  National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork and meet the requirements of most state boards.

Other Institutions

There are many other institutions, aside from the Institute for Integrative Healthcare Studies, which offer massage therapist continuing education and natural healing continuing education.

These include the National Massage Therapy Institute in the District of Columbia, the Baltimore School of Massage in Maryland, the Florida College of Natural Health and the Northern Virginia School of Therapeutic Massage.

Whatever institution you decide to go to for your massage therapist continuing education, it is important to make sure that it meets the standards for state regulations and that the coursework falls in line with safe, ethical practice.
