Finding Your Way at the Junior College in San Jacinto

San Jacinto Junior College is a large community college with four major locations across Houston and Pasadena. The school offers traditional programs, continuing education, distance learning, dual enrollment, university transfer and summer and weekend class sessions. Associate Degrees

Associate Degrees range from liberal arts subjects like English to applied sciences like Engineering. The majority of these programs are designed for students interested in obtaining a university transfer.

Associate of Applied Science Degrees

The AAS program consists of mostly highly focused technical and applied programs like Aircraft Maintenance or Auto Technician programs with a particular manufacturer's designation, such as Honda or Toyota.

Certificate Programs

Most certificate programs are connected to the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degrees, but they only require 37 credit hours, as opposed to the 60 to 65 that are typically required of a full two-year program.

Occupational Certificate Programs

The Occupational Certificate Programs are short and very specific. Because they only require 15 credit hours, they can be completed in a single full-time semester or part-time. Typically, the subjects or programs covered match those of the AAS degrees, but aren't as extensive in their selection.

Campus Locations

San Jacinto Junior College offers students 4 major branches or locations in both Houston and Pasadena. The school also operates five extension centers throughout the area that provide adult education, GED preparation, ESL training, software classes and career development training.

Transferring to a Texas University

If students meet the course and grade requirements, they can obtain guaranteed admission to Texas A&M, Texas A&M at Galveston, or Sam Houston State University. In order to qualify, students need to complete 24 credit hours while maintaining a minimum 2.5 GPA (3.0 for A&M).

Tuition and Fees

Tuition is just $33 per credit hour, plus a $130 service fee. Most in-state residents pay about $660 per semester for tuition and $500 to $600 on learning materials like books. Out of district or out-of-state students can expect to pay just over $1000 in tuition and the same $500 to $600 on materials.

San Jacinto Junior College also offers students financial aid, scholarships, bursaries, loans and a wide range of on-campus employment opportunities.
