Adult Education Prospective students who are sixteen years old or older, but who are not enrolled in high school can apply for Somerset Community College's adult education services. These programs offer basic skills that are necessary to attain a job or move forward toward a college education. Somerset Community College's adult education services include a GED program, an English-as-a-Second-Language course and courses in literacy, computer skills and parenting skills. They also provide career coaching and college preparatory programs. Educational Opportunity Center Serving thirteen counties in south-central Kentucky, the Educational Opportunity Center exists to help raise the number of mature, adult students who choose to pursue post-secondary education and enroll in learning institutions. The Center gives assistance to potential students by offering academic advice, career workshops and counseling. They give out information on financial assistance, college applications and admissions, tutoring and mentoring, among other things. To reach people who would not normally be applying to universities or colleges all ready, the Center assists US citizens from low-income backgrounds, people who come from families that do not have a history of attending university and veterans. Ready to Work The Ready to Work program helps students at technical colleges and community colleges obtain job skills with short term training, advising, mentoring, job references and referrals. Acknowledging that the transition to college can be a difficult one for some students, it also helps make that change a bit simpler and easier. The program is a joint effort of the Cabinet for Health and Family Services and the Kentucky Community and Technical College System. Their programs also include aid in updating the basic skills and education of people in the Kentucky Transitional Assistance Program who are working towards their GED. Lineman Tech Center Training for line work includes basic safety training, CPR, First Aid and Basic Rescuer training along with focused training on pole climbing, pole top rescue, bucket rescue, personal protection equipment and system protection and operation. An incredibly specialized training program, the Lineman Tech Center is focused on preparing students for a job in the electrical industry as line installers and repairmen. Lineman work is very dangerous and requires very specific training which Somerset Community College offers. See also: All Articles for College Selections
