South Puget Sound Community College has gone by a few other names in it's almost 50 year history.
Founded as Olympia Vocational Technical Institute in 1962, it was renamed Olympia Technical Community College fourteen years later. In 1984 it was finally renamed South Puget Sound Community College.
A College with a Big Community
Serving more than six thousand students each quarter, South Puget Sound Community College offers Associate degrees, bachelor's degrees, continuing education, adult high school diploma and GED programs, English-as-a-Second-Language classes and online and correspondence classes.
WorkFirst
Targeted towards parents who are looking for an easy way to complete their college education, WorkFirst's Tuition Assistance program provides financial aid that can be used for tuition, books, and other school fees.
WorkFirst lets parents take both credit and non-credit courses at South Puget Sound Community College.
To be eligible for this program, you must meet the financial criteria, which includes low-wage income guidelines and the receipt of Temporary Assistance to Needy Families assistance.
Funding can go towards high school completion or your GED, customized job skills training or certificates and associate of technical arts degrees.
Study Abroad
El Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey in Queretaro, Mexico, is South Puget Sound Community College's sister college.
As a student at South Puget Sound Community College it is possible to study as an exchange student as a way to experience international education opportunities.
South Puget Sound Community College also has programs sponsored by the Washington Community College Consortium for Study Abroad and the Study Abroad in Australia and New Zealand program.
These partnerships give students the opportunity to study in Italy, Costa Rica or New Zealand in study abroad programs.
Online Programs
Many students do not have the resources to study abroad, but many students don't even have the resources to study in a campus-based school. This is where online learning comes in handy.
Washington Online is a service provided by the Washington State Community and Technical college system. Faculty from throughout the system teach courses in a virtual classroom.
Students must enroll for Washington Online through a local college, like South Puget Sound Community College.
Unlike many distance learning programs, Washington Online is deadline driven and acts in much the same way as a regular classroom, only with students doing all their course work over the Internet.
